houdini showreel
vida music video - animation

The first three sequences of my showreel are from a music video that I worked on for a NZ musician, Vida. I created the first sequence using Houdini and after effects. I used a sphere with an animated mountain sop node to simulate the space liquid moving to the sound of the music. To create the collision of the train driving through the space liquid I changed the last frame of the space liquid into a vellum object so that the train was able to pass through it. For the background of the video, I used turbulent displacement and other effects on a variety of different space images in after effects to create the illusion of space. I used a space HDRI to ensure the space liquid looked even more realistic. The second sequence involved using Houdini to make a pop network connected to animated spheres. The animated spheres were then turned into a liquid form using VDB’s. To create the glowing rays around the space liquid I used the shape tool in after effects to create the shape of a ray. I then used anchor points to set them in the right place and added a glow effect.

CONCEPT ART
gig poster visualiser - redshift

For this gig visual poster I was responsible for creating the t-shirt, washing line and cloud font animation. I designed the t-shirt textures on substance painter. I rendered the animation in redshift.

alien portal - solaris

This sequence was based off a Solaris tutorial on YouTube. I added in the ‘alien portal’ to add more visual interest. The alien portal was made from multiple pop net layers and a pyro source on the outer most layer. The scene was made entirely in Houdini and I composited the AOV’s in Nuke.

car burning - axiom solver

For this sequence I followed a Houdini car on fire tutorial. I found my own car scan online and used an axiom solver and pyro bake volume to art direct the fire to my liking. I composited the scene in Nuke adding in the background and adjusting the AOV’s to my liking.

vellum animation
end4

To create this sequence I created three different animated vellum objects. For the green flower shaped object I used an edge fracture node appended to a vellum solver to create the effect of the object tearing and ripping apart. For the pink furry flower I used animated points to create the effect of growing hair out of the object. For the final melting object I turned the object into a flip fluid object so that it appeared to be melting.

pop simulation
houdini showreel 13 06 25 oliver.00 01 52 10.still004

I created this flower blooming sequence following an Entagma tutorial. I took the tutorial further by adding a pop simulation following a curve to give the illusion of pollen flying out of the flower.

flip fluid simulation
cake

This sequence involved using vellum to create the effect of the balloon floating and detaching from the string. I replaced the vellum balloon with a flip fluid object using the same material to give the effect of the balloon melting into icing.
